Emmy Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Documentary goes to The Memory of Darkness, Light, and Ice!

It was an incredible honor to be at the News & Doc Emmys - to be amongst so many great filmmakers and listed alongside such tremendous work. And I’m thrilled to announce that The Memory of Darkness, Light, and Ice took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Documentary! Director Kathy Kasic had the vision for a film that could make space for many things: in-depth science communication, big emotions around climate, the joy of discovery, and the sensory richness of being on the ice. I’m so grateful that I got to join her in the editing and writing for the film, and that viewers responded to it. Thank you NATAS!

The honor is shared with everyone who made the film possible: scientists and students contributing to the body of knowledge at the center of the project; the Native Greenlanders who lent their voice and wisdom; the crew, including a stellar team of cinematographers, graphic designers, animators, musicians, post-production craftspeople, and very importantly from where I sat, the group of assistant editors, students, and recent grads who contributed beautifully to the edit and post-production efforts.

I’m also grateful NSF supported this film and hope we can see more important climate and science communication continuing to be supported, which is not a given in today’s political climate. Adding to the urgency is the need to keep a diversity of stories thriving by blocking the merger, a message I was glad to see many attendees communicate.

The night reminded me of how in awe I am of everyone out there doing work to share important truths. The message from the evening was clear - that documentary, journalism, and truthful storytelling are of such critical importance right now. Keep up the good work, everyone!
